Dictionary Entry (Self-Portrait)
Pencil and ink on the inside cover of The Dictionary of Last Words
2024

I made this self-portrait on the inside cover of an old book titled The Dictionary of Last Words.

The drawing includes a profile portrait of me, across which I wrote the sentence, “May my last words be, “Hello death, my longtime companion.”

Surrounding the figure are symbolic forms that recur throughout my work: an ivy-like plant, a blue bow wrapping up a good life, the red thread of witchcraft that binds continuity, the ancestors, and fate, a honeybee, and two crows.

When I think of what my last words may be, I find that my ears would be tuning into the natural elements around me - but also to the longtime companion who has been with me every single day of my life - my Death.
